FIRE Certificate Programs

Fire Master’s Certificate
The Fire Master’s certificate will be granted to students who complete the FIRE Honor Master program and fulfill the requirements set by their base institution for obtaining a Master’s degree.

Coursework Requirements: At least two courses equivalent to a total of 6 credits must be credited from another FIRE institution.
Research Requirements: The thesis must demonstrate familiarity with previous work from different FIRE campuses. Guidelines and deadlines are set by the student’s base institution.
Study Abroad: Candidates must study for at least one session at another FIRE institution.
Program Evaluation: The study program must be evaluated by at least two FIRE faculty members from different campuses.


Fire Doctoral Certificate
The Fire Doctoral certificate will be granted to students who complete the FIRE Honor Ph.D. program and fulfill the requirements for obtaining a Ph.D. degree at their base institution.

Coursework Requirements: At least two courses equivalent to 6 credits must be credited from another FIRE institution.
Research Requirements: Two sessions (6-12 months) must be spent at a foreign institution recognized by FIRE.
Eligibility: Students with a Master’s degree from an approved institution pursuing a Ph.D. at a FIRE institution are eligible.
Thesis Requirements: The thesis must meet the base institution's standards and reflect the contributions made during the time spent abroad.
Examiners: The list of examiners must include at least one FIRE faculty member from a different FIRE institution.


Ad Hoc Program Certificate
The Ad Hoc Program certificate is for applicants who seek specialized training in refractory engineering.

Eligibility: Applicants must be recommended by FIRE members. These programs are typically aimed at experienced employees from refractory companies or post-doctoral fellows from FIRE institutions.
Program Details: The application, including courses and research training, must be approved by all involved institutions.
Program Purpose: These programs are designed to provide international exposure and collaboration in education and research.
Certificate: A FIRE certificate will be granted, although it is not equivalent to an academic diploma.

My interest in refractories began during my engineering studies in ceramics at ENSCI Limoges, when I discovered that the refractory specialisation offered an international research experience through the FIRE program. I quickly realised that refractories are far more complex and fascinating than simple bricks.

I had the immense pleasure of being invited to talk about cooperative refractory research and education during the plenary session of the 20th China National Youth Academic Symposium on Refractories last May. The event took place in Yangzhou, China, and served as a perfect platform to promote the key mission of the Federation of International Refractory Research and Education (FIRE).
