Federation for International Refractory Research and Education
Compendium Series
In order to further promote refractory research and education, FIRE launched in 2018 a compendium series in association and in partnership with Goller-Verlag publishing to make refractory science and technology available to academia, students, refractory raw material suppliers, producers, users and others interested in the refractory industry.
The FIRE Compendium Series are dedicated to a readership of academia, students, refractory manufacturers and refractory user industries from the sectors of iron and steel, non-ferrous metals, aluminium, cement, lime, glass and ceramics, high-performance composites and coatings, foundry, petrochemical, power generating and waste incineration.
The 4 volumes of the FIRE Compendium Series gives you a full overview on the following Refractory topics:
- Vol. 1 - Refractory: Castable Engineering
- Vol. 2A - Corrosion of Refractories: the fundamentals
- Vol. 2B - Corrosion of Refractories: testing and characterization methods
- Vol. 2C - Corrosion of Refractories : the impact of Corrosion
The Volume 1 addresses the fundamentals of refractory castable engineering with three distinct themes being presented in a sequence that not only considers the formulation concepts and properties but also the features and the optimization of different systems. This book represents unrivalled peer reviewed content in terms of castable engineering compared to previous publications and provides the reader with a unifying holistic view of such complex subject.
The three books of Volume 2 are intending to serve not only as reference books but also to serve for educational purposes, hence should be of interest to academia, students and research engineers in this field of expertise. Wear by corrosion of refractory materials remain a major concern for plant operators, manufacturers of refractories, installers and refractory engineers involved in R&D and Education in this field of expertise.
Volume 3 about Mechanical Properties is planned!

Imerys & FIRE: Driving Innovation in Refractories Through Global Collaboration
I had the immense pleasure of being invited to talk about cooperative refractory research and education during the plenary session of the 20th China National Youth Academic Symposium on Refractories last May. The event took place in Yangzhou, China, and served as a perfect platform to promote the key mission of the Federation of International Refractory Research and Education (FIRE).
