FIRE Admission Process

Application Deadlines
Admissions to FIRE programs are on a rolling basis.

Application Requirements

A letter of application must be submitted to the Secretariat with a supporting letter from one of the professors listed in the first section.
Applicants must demonstrate competency in English and in a second foreign language.


Language Competency

English: Proof of competency in English (oral and written) is required for non-native English speakers. Accepted tests include IELTS.
Second Language: An attestation from the Foreign Language Department of the relevant FIRE institution is required for a second foreign language (e.g., French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, or Japanese).
Third Language: Mastery of a third foreign language is encouraged but not required.


Admission Requirements for FIRE HONOR Masters and Ph.D.

Applicants must already be enrolled as regular students at a FIRE institution and in good standing.


Admission to an Ad Hoc Program

Ad Hoc program applications can be submitted at any time with the support of a supervisor from a FIRE institution or member.
Applications must include a detailed outline of the coursework and research training to be undertaken.

Humans have been gathering around fire for hundreds of thousands of years — for warmth, protection, food, and simply to talk. In a funny way, my own career also began around “fire,” just a far more engineered version of it. I first heard about FIRE during my Master’s in São Carlos, Brazil, thanks to Prof. Pandolfelli. I joined without imagining that this decision would quietly shape my entire professional path.

I began my journey in refractory materials in 2017, when I started my Master’s degree at GEMM (Materials Microstructure Engineering Group), under the supervision of Prof. Victor Pandolfelli. From that moment on, and with the continuous support of the FIRE network, my interest in this challenging and fascinating field of refractory ceramics has only grown stronger.
