Federation for International Refractory Research and Education
About FIRE
FIRE is a non-profit organization incorporated in Canada, providing a global network of academic institutions and companies active in the fields of refractories, including manufacturers, suppliers, users, and other service providers. Its mission is to stimulate and reinforce the higher education system in refractory materials engineering, addressing the educational and research needs of the Refractory Industry. FIRE has been offering excellent educational opportunities and international experiences to students since 2006, supporting the development of qualified human resources for the refractory sector.
FIRE’s strength lies in the unique collaboration between its members—academic researchers and industry producers—who learn from each other, sharing knowledge to effectively train qualified professionals. By doing so, FIRE ensures that its members, both academic and industrial, are equipped to meet the demands of the international market. This cooperative effort enhances the global competitiveness and sustainability of the Refractory Industry.
The organization offers coordinated programs of excellence in Refractory Engineering Education across ten institutions worldwide, located in Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States. These programs lead to certificates for students and also include co-directed research initiatives. Additionally, FIRE organizes ad hoc education programs, seminars, and colloquiums to keep its members updated on advances in refractory research.
Funded through membership fees and supplemented by international granting agencies, FIRE’s activities are conducted across five university campuses. By fostering synergies between academia and industry, FIRE plays a crucial role in advancing the Refractory Industry and preparing its members to navigate the challenges of today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Highlight of FIRE Alumni - Antoine Ducastel - RHI Magnesita
In 2010, as a student at ENSCI (École Nationale Supérieure de Céramique Industrielle), I had the opportunity to join the FIRE program and spend six months at the Nagoya Institute of Technology, working on the fabrication and characterization of complex carbide refractories.

From one network to another
I discovered the world of ceramics when I arrived at the ENSCI (the national engineering school for industrial ceramics) in Limoges, France, in 2004. I quickly became fascinated by refractory materials: these discreet but essential ceramics, without which many of the materials we use today simply could not exist.
