Highlight of FIRE Academic Members - Montanuniversität Leoben

Dietmar Gruber, Chair of Ceramics: "We are proud to be a founding member of FIRE, as FIRE unites Academia and Industry in refractories to accelerate global collaboration. From student exchanges to partnerships, we help people and ideas grow".

My journey began at the first FIRE meeting in Bruck an der Mur, Austria, in 2005 (Polytechnique Montréal, University of Orléans, University of Limoges, Missouri University of Science and Technology, University of São Carlos, Montanuniversität Leoben, , Nagoya University, TU Freiberg, Magnesita, RHI, Corus and Alcan).

Since then, FIRE has grown into a truly global network: we’ve welcomed students from around the world, launched numerous research projects with Industrial partners, and supported many PhDs.

FIRE connects companies with talent, helps the Refractory Industry innovate, and enables Academic partners to attract outstanding students.

If FIRE didn’t exist, we’d have to invent it!

My interest in refractories began during my engineering studies in ceramics at ENSCI Limoges, when I discovered that the refractory specialisation offered an international research experience through the FIRE program. I quickly realised that refractories are far more complex and fascinating than simple bricks.

Imerys & FIRE: Driving Innovation in Refractories Through Global Collaboration

I had the immense pleasure of being invited to talk about cooperative refractory research and education during the plenary session of the 20th China National Youth Academic Symposium on Refractories last May. The event took place in Yangzhou, China, and served as a perfect platform to promote the key mission of the Federation of International Refractory Research and Education (FIRE).
